Arlo: Why didn't you just lay out the whole thing for us?
Arlo: I can accept that, but you'll have to think of something better for your mother!
Arlo: Now come on in - I have some questions to ask you about the schooner!
Gene likely felt he could solve his problems without talking to his parents because they might treat him like a kid. And, with Janis, there is a tendency to baby him.
Either way, he knows that Mary Lou is right about finishing college.
I agree with StoicLion…and I’m glad this is what it turned out to be.
To those who said MaryLou was henpecking him…. no, that’s backwards!Kathymcel said some of it yesterday…but the story goes back to when they got together.MaryLou said she never wanted to be seen as the girl who saddled him with someone else’s kid and took him away from college. It was GENE who told her not to worry, that he had no intention of dropping out.But they care about each other so much he DID drop out, wanting more to build a life together…first helping in the restaurant, now starting the farm.MaryLou doesn’t want him to go to school for HER benefit…she wants him to follow HIS dream, and not just hers. And he doesn’t want to go because he thinks she needs him more at the farm, especially so when he sees that she works all the time and won’t take time for fun. It’s an “argument” familiar only to those who understand having to MAKE your significant other do something "selfish.
Love the way Arlo works, “A win, win for everyone.”.I suspected the way Gene presented the problem wasn’t what was really happening..Glad to see it’s a good thing, not a falling out..I’m betting Arlo will light up on the total news, but be a bit peeved with Gene for making her worry so..Now about that schooner…
I told my son to make sure that he and his future wife know what each plans to do with their life. My wife and I didn’t do that, and it cost me a career that I waited my whole life for. This caused a lot of pain, and took a long time to heal.

Leave it to Arlo (last panel) to always get to the ‘important’ stuff. Arlo believes that ‘that’ ship has not yet sailed.

I think the schooner will be part of Gus’ dowry to Arlo and Janis.

It would be dreamy to have your own boat and sail away.

I thought it was a sloop, not a schooner.
