I think that Alice’s theory is quite plausible.

It’s funny because it’s true! :) But what about cereal’s symbiotic, mutualistic relationship with the toys that sit at the bottom of the bag? Isn’t that the peak of cereal’s evolution?

I wonder what Alice would think of Calvin’s cereal, Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs. Perfection in a box?

And then once you get hooked on a particular flavor, they stop making it

@neatslob—In one strip Calvin did mention to his mother that they had a variety with marshmallows.

I think in the evolution of cereals, chocolate appears much earlier: cf. Pebbles cereal.

what i ahte about cereal is that the milk gets into the marshmallows and they lose flavor. so i eat it dry.

I’d love to hear Alice’s take on the COMMERCIALS for breakfast cereals! Have you noticed how in many commercials the mere act of ingesting just one spoonful of Sugar Bombs triggers a hallucinatory experience? The child is transported to a colorful, magical land, or in some commercials even turns into a cartoon or video game character. Imagine the child’s disappointment when that promised wondrous transformation never happens – no wonder they go searching for bigger thrills! The conclusion is obvious: Breakfast cereals are a gateway drug.

You can buy bags of cereal marshmallows. They’re fairly cheap as well.

I agree. We should start with marshmallows and add in chocolate cereal.

Sugar was added to cereal in 1950, although there may have been a tiny bit before, as in Cheerios (which used to taste different) has sugar down a bit in the ingredients list. Sugar Crisp was the first I saw-sugar coated puffed wheat. Two long gone cereals I loved were Muffets and Krumbles.

There has been a movement toward low sugar or “no sugar” in children’s cereals to appease the parents. One type of cereal in our cabinet has “organic brown rice syrup.”On another note, when I was in my 20’s, one of my favorite cereals was Kellogg’s ;Triple Snack – sugar-puffed corn, sugar-puffed wheat, and . . . whole peanuts (with their brown skins on, as I recall)! http://www.mrbreakfast.com/cereal_detail.asp?id=895Mmm – talk about da bomb! Then they had to discontinue it!

. . . and I forgot to mention that Kellogg’s Triple Snack had a unique mascot, shown on the package – a blue giraffe.

I like the name of the cereal, “Oeos”.Does anybody remember Freakies cereal? I loved that. I still remember the jingle. -We are the Freakies under the freakies tree. We never miss a meal, cause we love our cereal.

You’re right, Alice, but if you start with marshmallows, they evolve into gorp.
