Arlo: We're going to be practical about this - we're going to make a list!
Arlo: The pros and cons of boat ownership!
Arlo: OK, good reasons to NOT buy the boat...
Arlo: Hey, Mary Lou! What's this?
Mary Lou: Menus and a wine list!
An old schooner with a deep bilge should have room for a couple cases of wine. It will stay chilled until you get to the Caribbean or the South Pacific, then you will need solar powered refrigeration.
Some of you must have never been by a marinas in the summer. usually the places are filled with people who’s boats are the equivalent. of cottages only they float and can move. you see pets, grandkids running all around, pizza being delivered. 2incomes 1 grown kid they should be able to afford it. hopefully their house isn’t under water.
No couple with an ounce of romance in their souls – Arlo and Janis have quite a bit more than that – can possibly think practically while on a boat at night on a beautiful summer evening with good wine and good food.
@Win Obviously, you’ve never owned a boat. Hundreds of dollars? Surley, you jest! There isn’t anything on a boat that costs just “hundreds of dollars!” It’s been my experience that even the simplest item, on a boat, is in the thousands of dollars! Not to mention the putting in and taking out of the water. Cleaning the hull. Yuck!!!! I’d rather have needles in my eyes!
You can leave a cat alone for 3 or 4 days. Just make sure he has enough food, water and a clean litter box. Oh, and new curtains to tear to shreds as he is going to be mad as hell about being left alone for 3 or 4 days.
Wow… Gus is REALLY pulling out all the stops to get him to buy it. Well, he’s been trying on and off for how many months/years as it is and he still has the darned boat. LOL!
twypsi, et al: My entire yacht (mentioned earlier) didn’t cost that much. [Yacht: a privately owned pleasure vessel of at least 18 foot waterline length – my kayak makes it by four inches.] What upkeep? An occasional waxing. Marina? It on a shelf in the garage now. At least two kayaks have crossed the Atlantic, they are originally ocean-going craft.
I am confused. Maybe I missed something. Hasn’t Arlo talked about wanting a boat for years. Why is he just now starting to make a pro and con list? Is he trying to talk himself out of it?Just wondering.

What on earth is a “menus?” Sounds filthy.

LhPuttgrass.. surely you’re kidding? In case you’re serious, “menus” is the plural of “menu.”

There is nothing practical or realistic about owning a boat. That’s not the point.

Boat owner for over 30 years, love them but they’re like any other luxury, you don’t justify, you enjoy, otherwise it’s a necessity. ;)
