Unfortunately, life is way too short. You have a few summers like this and before you know it, you look back and think about what you’ve done with your life. The short answer: nothing. Sigh.
“Where are we going?” said Pooh, hurrying after him……. “Nowhere,” said Christopher Robin. So they began going there, and after they had walked a little way Christopher Robin said:“What do you like doing best in the world, Pooh?”“Well,” said Pooh, “what I like best – - – -” and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn’t know what it was called. And then he thought that being with Christopher Robin was a very good thing to do, and having Piglet near was a very friendly thing to have; and so, when he had thought it all out, he said, “What I like best in the whole world is Me and Piglet going to see You, and You saying ‘What about a little something?’ and Me saying, ‘Well, I shouldn’t mind a little something, should you, Piglet,’ and it being a hummy sort of day outside, and birds singing.”“I like that too, said Christopher Robin, “but what I like doing best is Nothing.”“How do you do Nothing?” asked Pooh, after he had wondered for a long time.“Well, it’s when people call out at you just as you’re going off to do it, ‘What are you going to do, Christopher Robin,’ and you say, ‘Oh, nothing,’ and then you go and do it.”“Oh, I see,” said Pooh.“This is a nothing sort of thing that we’re doing now.”“Oh, I see,” said Pooh again.“It means just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering.”“Oh!” said Pooh. — A. A. Milne, The House at Pooh Corner, Chapter X
“Occupy (yourselves with the talents) till I come!” Luke 19:13b“There remains therefore a REST to the people of God.”“Let us labor therefore to enter into that REST, lest anyone fall after the same example of unbelief.” Hebrew 4:9,11
Don’t slam the door on the way out, but don’t forget to shut it, either!I’d jump down those dangerous looking steps, too, and even more importantly, I’d jump up, coming back!
@mythreesons,“Apathy or indifference is the death of love,” …or anything else, even (Snagglepuss)“By jove, I think you have it!”, with apologies to any Jove worshippers out there. You have done well to get over it, become friends with your ex, and gone on with your life. Lingering resentment and bitterness hurts you more than anyone else. Why punish yourself?By the way, I almost always rise before 6 AM, but sometimes I have more urgent matters to which to attend. I do go back to the comments from the previous day to catch anything I missed since my last comment, but thank you for following up!You may tread water in midstream with Hobbes as long as you like, I don’t care (mind)! Actually, I kind of enjoy the banter!Have a great day, Fred MacMurray, since that’s who you really are! :o)
“The problem with doing nothing is not knowing when you’re finished.” —Benjamin Franklin (I know that’s not very Calvin and Hobbes at all, but I still love the quote!)
Sometimes a day of doing nothing is good, but I remember being really bored when I was young, wishing I had something to do. I try to have a mix of activities and nothing (i.e. their choice) for my kids now.
I want to add that when it’s “nothing” time, it rarely involves electronics and almost never a TV. They are good at entertaining themselves without either one.Like Calvin & Hobbes, we play outside as long as the weather is good.
Sometimes doing nothing just means doing whatever comes up when it comes up. My Mom could never do that. Even on what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation she always had a timetable of what we were supposed to do and when.
