@GretchensMom I just caught up and wanted to say, I am so very sorry for the loss of your cousin. I agree wholeheartedly about living life as if it can be easily taken away. My mother is recovering from surgery as we speak. It was unexpected and we almost lost her. She is doning fine now, but it really brings home how fragile life truly is.
@cookies333: Lucy is speaking for their mom in this one, because there are no adults in the strip. So it makes Lucy seem even more crabby sometimes, because she is also the bearer of bad news from their mom to Linus. In the early years, Charles Schulz experimented with parents’ voices coming from outside the panels, but then he gave up on that and used Lucy instead. The panels in the earliest Peanuts strips were so short that there was no room to show adults full height next to the kids, without making the kids tiny. Calvin and Hobbes works better this way because the panels are much taller. In today’s strip, note that Mom is more than twice as tall as Calvin, but the panel is tall enough that you can still see Calvin fine.

Never, ever, tell your mother that you don’t have anything to do. The results will be horrific.

My take on the 3rd panel: Mom is contemplating becoming an advocate for birth control.

I think Mom will have the last brag. She’s contemplating all the things she can get you to do.

@sonnygreen: Actually, Bill W. is enjoying a light couple of decades. Today’s strip is from July 1992.
