Transcript:
Baldo: Dad, when you were my age, did you and your Dad understand each other? Dad: Baldo, me and my father understood each other perfectly well. Dad: He gave the orders and I followed them.
It would be really sad if that were their primary communication. And yet it seems that most dads (and moms, for that matter) believe that they obeyed their dads without any backtalk whatsoever. Usually, their dads tell a different story. It is in the nature of adolescence to rebel at least a little.
Kids should be raised with expectations. I expect that when I tell them to do something they will do it, just as did what my father told me to do. Doesn’t mean I liked it, or that we always agreed, and I was encouraged to use my imaginaition when accomplishing tasks. But allowing kids to essentially ignore their parents leads to big problems as they mature.
