Heart: Dean! Are you insane?! Why would you write that?! Dean: We're gonna see it soon anyway.. Dean: I figure maybe this way, it won't be such a shock.
@NabuquduriuzhurI doubt it has anything to do with “vacation days” for teachers. Each state is required to have a certain number of days or hours that are teacher-student contact. Kansas uses hours, so by lengthening our days, we’ve actually shortened our year. We don’t start until Aug. 23, and we get out May 15. Your state may just be requiring more contact days. With the ridiculous NCLB Act, states have done all sorts of things to try to “help” their schools meet state standards in order to show adequate yearly progress. For some, unfortunately, it means adding more school days to the calendar.
BLASPHEMY!!!! PERFIDY!!!!!!!!!! LET THAT CHALK BE WASHED AWAY IN A SUDDEN THUNDERSTORM!!!!!==That being out of my system – - – - in my day the school year ran from the Wednesday after Labor Day until about the middle of June. 180 days in the school year, and it worked well enough in terms of time.Every generation seems to think that the next one doesn’t get enough school time, but they don’t seem to address what is being taught in school, which is far more important.
In my day, back in Ohio, we went from the Wednesday after Labor Day until about the 9th or 10th of June.We had those 2 1/2 months off to enjoy the summer. The idea of kids having to go longer and having to go back sooner because they will forget what they learned over the summer seems unreal. Either they learn their lessons or they did not. That is what summer school was for some students.
I went to school in Birtle, Manitoba, Canada, and I remember school starting on the day after Labor Day in September and ending on the last Friday of June.

Although I did K to 12 in Washington, most of my cousins and their children in Arizona didn’t/don’t start school until mid-August.

This is much too early here. We usually go back Sept. 1. Because of the weekend, it’s after Labor Day this year.
