The University of Parma in Italy is nearly 1000 years old! The sandwich was invented in England by John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, during a card game in 1762! A mouse can squeeze itself through a hole about the width of a ballpoint pen!

Not only did he invent the standard lunch-time fare, he also had a group of islands named after him.

Which species of mice can do that? Which can’t?

How do mice do that? Their skulls aren’t that small, not even for a dormouse. Though an African Pigmy Mouse might be able to.

I had a mouse in the washing machine. It could not get out of the holes in the sides.

Believe it or not? A mouse can’t get through a hole that small — sooooo — NOT!

It’s only possible after the mouse steals the cheese, and gets thrown into the pen!

Did the Earl really invent the sandwich? He may have been the first ENGLISHMAN to put a slab of meat between pieces of bread, but almost every country in the world has a version of that —some from cultures that go way back before there ever was an English Earl of Sandwich!

@ Simpsonfan2 that’s because the name “john” for toilets came from the king declaring that all toilets in England were to be named after Prince John who usurped the king’s power while in the crusades. At least, that’s what Men in Tights says

The Sandwich was NOT invented by the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Possibly he could be credited with popularizing the name, but I’d be skeptical of even that.

Good thing I already cover holes that size to keep out insects.

You would have thought the sandwich would have been an created much earlier. Especially with a college in Italy 1000 years old.

I hear there’s a whole bunch of rich men funding research to do just that. I’m not entirely sure why.

A mouse can get under a 1/4" space, but not through a 1/4" hole. I have see one squeeze under a door.

i dont think mice can go through a space that small…

I think the actual truth about the mouse and the pen-hole is that a hole the size of a ballpoint pen can let a mouse in (by its gnawing the hole to a more reasonable size), but it still wouldn’t need to be much larger.

No one person invented the toilet. Various people came along with improvements and modifications to create the modern toilet that we use today. Just like the automobile—Ford didn’t invent it.

The sandwich was definitely named for the Earl of Sandwich and the story that he wanted to eat roast beef without getting his fingers all messy, thus interfering with his cardplaying, is probably fairly accurate. The exact details of who came up with the idea of using bread as the isolating device is, unfortunately, lost to history. Certainly other cultures have had stuffed buns for centuries before his time, but none of them were called by the name “sandwich” until the device was named for him.
As for Thomas Crapper, he was a plumber who dealt with toilets among other things, and is credited (see the Wikipedia article on him) with some developments to the flush toilet. (His patents did not include the basic idea of being able to flush the contents out with water. In fact, Roman public toilets were equipped with a continually flowing stream of water.) The term for human waste, however, predates his lifetime by many years. His name may have contributed to the use of the word for the device, but it might well have ended up being called that even without his connection.
