When phones first started appearing in upper-class homes in the late 1800s, people thought them incredibly rude. NO ONE was allowed to ‘just show up’ at your home. First a potential visitor would send a calling card asking to be invited over. Then the host would respond with a date and time. Then the visit.Telephones completely violated this protocol, essentially saying “Whatever you’re doing, and whoever you’re talking to, stop now. And pay attention to ME”.QV is right.
Call me old fashioned but I would like to see the 9 to 9 rule brought back for personal ( home ) phones. I never call anyone prior to 9am or after 9pm unless it is an emergency or I’ve been requested to call at a specific time.Conversely, I never answer my phone before or after those times, if I can help it. Thank God for Caller-ID and Voice Mail!
When I get a phone call from an African voice, telling me I’ve got a virus on my computer; I ask, “which one?”
They usually ask what I mean. I tell them I have 5 computers then the voice says “Windows 7 Operating System.”
I say, “I use Mac operating system”. The line goes dead..I don’t, but I wonder how many people believe anyone on the end of the line can tell such things. I’m thinking of barring unidentified calls.

Considering how many people are slaves to their phones, you have to admire QV’s conviction.

Jimbo, yes. We should have priority, we bothered to come into the store. How did it ever happen to get reversed?
