Click-to-enlarge image available from here (last View All Sizes choice).Melancholy (Wikipedia page) is described in its current-location page (the source the the different coloration title image). The page also has 2 embedded English-subtitled videos, that discuss the painting from the artist and conservator perspective, respectively, as well as a link to its Google Art Project page. It also has a high-resolution image download link; my personal recommendation is to NOT click that. This has another description of the painting. The artist (collection link at the end) painted at least 2 similar paintings (one shown there is a detail image), which were based on Albrecht Dürer’s engraving. The artist’s Wikipedia page and collection (many more under Subcategories at each level). So far, 4 works by this artist have appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog.
Man , this is one cryptic picture. The dog, the two birds, the ball, the hoop, the four horsemen escorting some dude to who knows where, the stuff in the upper right that I can’t quite make out. I’m sure there’s more but the picture resolution is too low.

A new game is born. Lever-ball.

But the real lever ball is made of solid marble.

Give us a lever and a fulcrum and we just might be able to shift this ball…

Maybe it’s just my new glasses, but that ball looks as though it’s too big to go thru the hoop. The teacher must be the angel of lost causes.

I like the kid on the left with the Rasta braids and the race on goats and boars is going to be featured in the Olympics this week.
