I think the movie was called “The Kentucky Fried Movie” and it was from the late 1970s. As I recall, the movie had a number of short stories in it, one of which was about sex as a competitive sport. It was set up as live on TV, like you were watching the Olympics, but the overseas picture would keep cutting out and all you would get was audio. My wife and I watched it in a theater on Bird Road in Miami, Florida. Not a real good movie, as I remember it, but now I feel compelled to look it up.
Slightly related. Has anyone seen this year’s Olympics title that shows on TV? I was channel surfing and saw XXX Olympics. If sex was ever going to be an Olympic sport, then this would be the year to start.
If it was an Olympic event NBC would see their ratings sky rocket. From what I hear, the athletes do make sex an event as they compete after hours with other athletes. That puts real meaning to screwing the competiton.
I swear I don’t remember a single moment of The Groove Tube, but I’m pretty sure I saw it. I just looked it up and the poster for the movie looks very familiar. I think I saw both that and "Kentucky Fried movie.)
Oh for the days when I could waste time seeing bad movies!
It’s likely that—-without realizing it—-I was playing off a scene in this movie when I wrote the gag.

May not be an event but it can make you popular in the Olympic village.

DoctorLarryO: I think that was “The Groove Tube,” actually. “Kentucky Fried Movie” gave us Big Jim Slade, instead,
