Are you saying that the US doesn’t have nuclear warheads? If one country is allowed to have them, others will want some too..This isn’t an editorial (political) strip.
Full disclosure: I live in Littleton, CO, and attend church with several Columbine families. As well, I work in Aurora, and my son’s martial-arts coach lost a friend of hers three weeks ago.
You want to know why those things happened, or why war or any other bad things happen? There is evil in the world. That’s why. You can legislate everything you want, but you can’t legislate evil out of the world.
Having said that, however, imagine if, at 9:00 AM three weeks and one day ago, you had appeared from out of nowhere and shot J.E.H. to death. That you would have pre-emptively prevented 12 deaths is irrelevant. At that point, he hadn’t actually done anything, and you killed an innocent civilian. Perhaps this will assist you in seeing the fallacy in your argument.
Obviously, it was much more complicated than that with regard to WWII. Americans did not want to mess with Germany in large part because German-Americans made up a very large minority of the population at the time – they wanted nothing to do with fighting their relatives back in the old country. Secondly, a LOT of Americans admired Hitler, especially industrialists such as Henry Ford (who wrote several tracts for the Nazi Party in the 1930s – yes, I’ve read them). Even then English were loathe to go to war with Germany because the Kaiser was kin to the King. And lest we forget, Americans weren’t particularly keen on England at the time – that’s why the king and queen came to the US in 1939, trying to make nice. Few understood the real horror of Nazism, though its anti-semite stance was well known. It’s just that Americans were a pretty anti-semitic crowd, too, at the time.

I’m a pacifist and I can see the humour. Pull the pin and give the kitty the toy.

I live in Seoul, roughly fifty miles from about a million North Korean soldiers. What would you suggest we do?

If only…Maybe that cat can toss a few at Dennis the Menace and some other strips that have totally exhausted whatever humor they once contained.
