Our school is very reasonable with homework. About 10 minutes per grade level per weekday. We still have the fights (which are important) and they practice their spelling and math about the right amount, to still have loads of playtime if they do it right off.
Since when is homework optional? My “suggestion” to my kids is get it done first & then have the rest of the evening to do what you want. Even on Fridays, they say “I can do it tomorrow or Sunday” & I say “you’ll want to go somewhere tomorrow or Sunday or you’ll want to do something fun, do it now”
Beetle Bailey comic where Sarge is laughing at graffiti until he finds one about him. He then says “Beetle, will you scrub off that graffiti?”. Beetle replies “If I want to.” Sarge shakes him viciously saying “Well, want to, WANT TO!!”. Later Beetle is cleaning up the graffiti when the commanding general comes by and asks “Private Bailey, why are you scrubbing the walls?” and Beetle replies “Because I wanted to.” The last panel shows an awards ceremony where General Halftrack presents Private Bailey with the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal “for volunteering without formal orders”.
My son is very smart, but refuses to do his homework (or argues about it for hours until it is not doable.) Yet he aces his tests. His grades are in the hole because homework is usually around 60 to 80% of his grade assessment. He’s a senior this year, though he is probably not college bound. We’re still looking for a career possibility for him that does not include the phrase, “want fries with that?”
I didn’t like doing homework but I was always one of those kids that did it all as soon as I got home — even on Fridays. That way, I had the whole rest of the night (and weekend) to do whatever I wanted that was actually fun without having to worry about homework still needing to be done.
Parents have to lay down the law thick, especially when it comes to homework. Education is important. That stern look on John’s face helped Michael get where he was later on.

THAT’S the attitude! (Good sneer, John, in the final panel.)

See, Mike, you just learned something ELSE today. The threat of impending doom is a GREAT incentive!

Homework was never an issue for me; I was homeschooled.

I once thought Beetle Bailey was funny -and then spent 3 years in the Army-
