James sounds like this guy I heard give his order at McDonalds once. He ordered a Big Mac, Large fries, a milkshake and a Diet Coke..as if the 150 calories he saved there was going to undo the damage of the rest of the meal!!!
This really takes me back. Over thirty years ago I worked with a young woman who grew up in Towson, an affluent north Baltimore suburb, and she used to talk about how she feared the “hillbillies” who lived in the city of Baltimore. I always assumed that the people she referred to were refugees from the poverty of Appalachia who moved to the big city of Baltimore to seek a better life. Every time I see James in this strip, that’s what I think of.
My husband will tell you: when we were dating, he’d come down to my house in the morning and I’d be eating Twinkies and drinking hot tea for breakfast.
Y’all are missing the point. If James put his hand in my food (as he is doing here) I would throw it away. I seriously doubt that my parents would have allowed me to associate with James at all, not because he’s poor but because he is definitely unsanitary.

I had a room mate who I chided for eating Snickers for breakfast. The next morning, he sliced his Snickers into thin pieces and poured milk over them.

There is also a scene in “Where’s Poppa?” where Ruth Gordon pours Pepsi over a bowl of cereal. (I loved Ruth Gordon).
