It’s funny how, on revisiting the street where I grew up, the huge hill at the end of the road, that we used to slide down, had shrunk. Somehow, the mountain of my childhood was now, no more than a modest slope.Likewise, the dark forests that we played in, turned into small copses of trees, and the raging rivers we forded became tiny brooks, and lazy little streams.
Linguist: At least a copse is still there. As a child, I remember Arden Forest at SMU (they actually performed As You like It there) with a little stream running through it. I repaired a broken skate strap with some water sedges from the creek once. Now there is no creek and the forest is a half dozen bois d’ark trees shading a playground inside a fence (probably as much to protect the trees as to prevent children wandering off). The rest is university buildings and a few planted cedar elms along the streets. Not all the damage is a trick of memory.

I used to slide down a muddy hill in a cardboard box. It was fun until we got scolded for playing next to the railway tracks.
