In “Horsefeathers” a panhandler asks Harpo for money to buy a cup of coffee – the presumption being that he’ll use it for bohot otleg booze; Harpo pulls a hot cup of coffee out of his coat.
For a while I saw many of these scams going on in parking lots. I never gave them money unless they actually did some work. I had one young couple come to my house to do some weeding (and they DID, but they kept giving me more sob stories and doing ever less work and promising to come back and finish the next day, etc.) I’m glad that Rose did not have as much hassel.
