Horace here’s another cup of coffee.… now pay attention:First you reduce (6-7) to -1Next you reduce 6(-1) which is 6 times -1 to -6Next you reduce ( 4-6+2) witch is -0The trick is to reduce [-6(-1)] to 6 …..Then 46 is 11Finally you reduce 4 +11 to get 15Math is probably not for us Horace..Let’s stick with Philosophy.

[6 – (4 – 6(6 – 7) + 2)] +7=[6 – (4 – 6(-1) +2)] +7 =[6 – (4 – -6) +2)] +7 =[6 – (10) + 2)] + 7=[6 – 12] +7 =[-6] + 7 = 1I think

It’s good on multiple choice quizzes, too.

For what it’s worth, I was a mathematics major in college. The answer is 1.
mikel52 about 12 years ago
The answer (as always) is 42

One way or another, coffee leads to a number one.

Drink your coffee and skip numbers all together. That’s what I do and that’s what calculators are for.

Love today’s strip, it’s definitely a keeper. I love how it actually makes me think, and helps me work on my math skills…I agree that the answer is 1

1 is right. Do each bracket separately, but start from the one farthest inside first. ;-)

I came up with 9 but didn’t consider negative numbers. However, if all you math wiz kids can’t agree……the answer must be 42. Oh and I have my towel.

Obviously, it depends on imaginary numbers like eleventeen and negative thirty-twelve.

1[6 – (4 – 6(6 – 7) + 2)] 7= [6 – (4 – 6(- 1) + 2)]7 (as 6 – 7 = – 1)= [6 – (4 + 6 + 2)] + 7 (because – 6 * – 1 = + 6)= [6 – 12] + 7= [- 6] + 7= 7 – 6= 1
I really love maths! I can do this in my head.
And Algebra …
Especially linear quadratic and cubic equations!
Not that much of a fan of calculus and trigonometry though (even if I know the standard angles and the standard derivations by heart)

Trig is sometimes useful, if you’re a roofer…
