I used to be terrified of public speaking. However, in graduate school, I had to present my semester-long research results to an audience for a final grade. I knew my subject matter well, and my presentation was well-received. It caused a breakthrough and, after that, I even looked forward to making presentations. The trick is to know your subject matter really well, make it interesting, and remember that you probably know more about the subject than most of your audience does.
I don’t mind public speaking if I’m prepared, but HATE to be asked to read something out loud that I haven’t seen before. I’d disappear as fast as those participants above did.
I had to present info in public as part of my job (now retired) as a city or county planner. I used to pick one person to ‘talk’ to who looked like he or she was actually interested and just tell myself that this was my friend who I was talking to, not an elected official, board member or member of the public. Lots of times this worked…

I was going to join a support group for procrastinators, but I just didn’t feel like it.

Glossophobia: fear of public speaking (I had to look it up).

This can happen when you don’t know your audience. [Of course it’s hard to (get to) know your audience if you aren’t introduced.]

Horace is just too tame. It takes wild horses to get some people to work up the courage to ask for the time of day. :)
