Don’t take verbal or physical threats lightly….

    Hmmm….

So, like, if I’m a homicide detective and I happen to meet a conductor, and he happens to tell me several hundred times that he’s going to kill his son, maybe I should do something besides stand around?

    Good morn’, everyone.

I like that Crimestoppers panel. It must depict a Dick Tracy fan confronting Dick Locher.

Notice that the second black dot / bullet isn’t lined up with the second statement. It just hangs there in space, mysteriously.

    I had a better Crimestopper:

    – Don’t moon Moon Maid.

    – It’s lewd and against the law!

I don’t often read modern “Dick Tracy” since Max A. Collins was given the boot years ago, but thought I’d stop by and see what’s been happening lately. It reminded me why I stopped reading…

May 2, 2010 – “The Blank disappeared years ago… leaving a trail of dead bodies.”

No, you captured him and it turned out to by a guy named Frank Redrum. who was killing his old gang for deserting him during a prison break, during which his face was eff-ed up by gunfire and made all “Phantom of the Opera”-y.

This is why I hate the strip these days, as it’s now being written by… somebody from the mailroom that they’re paying with beer, apparently, who had no time to bone up on any of the strip’s history, at all!

That’s not a bullet point, it’s a punch hole. You’re supposed to carefully cut out that panel, glue it to cardboard, and file it away for future reference. If you actually do this, there is something seriously wrong.

    barticle35:

I realized that after I typed in my comment and went back to look at other Sunday strips. Never caught that detail before. But since the art has so many holes, I thought it was another mistake.

As for the bit, “grandson of the Blank.” I speculated before that the Tracy we see now is the son or nephew of the original DT. Maybe Dick has aged more or less along with the strip and now he’s a senior citizen fighting the grandsons of baddies he put away.

So if he’s so old, how does Dick fight crime without a break? It Depends…

Panel-Panner, how about this for a Crimestopper:

“If Moon Maid moons you, report it to the police.”

    With a suitable illustration….

This week’s Crimestopper actually makes sense (how long has it been since that happened?) but I’m afraid Dick Tracy and his colleagues are unable to practice what they preach. They are unable to tell what a threat is. (They can’t tell what a ransom note is, either.) They did report the note taped to the meteor and the sign left on his lawn to each other, but they can’t tell if they’re threats or not. Oh well.

Someone once calculated that if you had cut out all of the crimestoppers and put them in a textbook it would reach from here to the moon sixteen times. Well, maybe not sixteen, but a lot.

wrong!– I tried that and once I had those textbooks stacked past the upper atmosphere and they became weightless and were all over the place. I am here to say that is a misconception that you can stretch things end to end to reach the moon in order to prove a point.

It’s a good thing Brorzman only gave us a head shot of Lizz in panel three, had he revealed the upper torso, we’d have noted the ‘pronounced’ middle age SAG and the rationalization for that SIGN – attempting to recruit new TALENT for the POLICE ’hooters’ CLUB

An earlier ‘thrust’ (or lack there of) in 2008 failed when new ‘try out’ talent Shirl Locke Holmes was almost eaten alive by Baskerville’s hungry Hounds (who rejected Tracy’s T-Bone steak ploy), mistaking her for a ‘meatless’ BONE something they wanted to get their teeth into. Seems she wasn’t endowed with the necessary powerful ‘WHISTLES’ ! Animal Control had to tranquilize the dogs.

Thanks, PP! I’ve had much the same idea, that the current “Dick” Tracy is actual J.F. all grown up.

I haven’t calculated the actual amount that time is stretched out within a comic strip against real-life, but I’d guess that J.F. was actually born in the late, late ’50s, in which case he’d be old enough to become a cop and eventually take over his old man’s old position around the time of the early Collins years.

That explains a lot. I remember that “The Blank” died in the novel, so couldn’t be around for this. Johnny Nothing is The Blank’s grandson, and obviously is dead set on avenging his grandfather.

Sorry, falcon_370f… the only novel where The Blank died was in the novelization of the Warren Beatty movie. The comic strips show the Blank being caught alive, and then being unmasked at police headquarters as Frank Redrum. That was the last we saw of him as DT and co. started on a alien smuggling/slavery ring they accidentally found while chasing the Blank.

Anja Nu is wordplay, but nothing so odd. An ingenue (pronounced, well, anja nu) is a young actress, so I guess the intent is ironic … or misinformed … or … lazy.

    Lazy, yeah. Thassit.

Sigh, the old ‘relative of old criminal who is out for revenge or-and is a criminal themselves’ plot device. Gould himself had worn that idea into a cliched stump by the time he retired and time has not really improved it. I would to see a decedent of an old Tracy villain on Tracy’s of the law for a change.

I am kind of hoping “The Blank disappeared years ago… leaving a trail of dead bodies.” is in reference to some post 1938 jail break rather than the didn’t bother to go look it up mess it currently looks like.

1: If Johnny Nothing is “better known as the grandson of the Blank,” this means that’s the name most people would know him by. So why didn’t Tracy (or any of the supporting cast) immediately recognize him?

2: Panel-Panner: while Johnny is the slightly-language-impaired grandson of the Blank, Tracy is NOT the slightly-deductively-impaired grandson of the original Tracy. He is in fact the genuine article, kept alive and looking like his original self for all these years by a strange piece of art down in Diet Smith’s basement…

LudwigV – Do you think Anja Nu might really be Nancy Pelosi in disguise ? - It could all be a ‘Liberal’ plot to get back at Goild’s right wing ‘rantings’ on crime.

And if we believe Jeff, Gould handed that Tracy BATON “directly” to Locher
