I haven’t read that one, but I do remember De Haven’s other work…. one that is quite fitting, considering the present Tracy scribe (wink wink nudge nudge)

When he said ‘puzzling’, it struck me that Sam looks like The Riddler in that green suit!

I know Mike & Joe are striving for a “timeless” setting for the stories, but presesnt health codes like ‘no smoking in municipal buildings’ should be included in the strip.

My wife and I are non-smokers who worked in newspaper offices which allowed smoking, and we’ve both had cancer.

Thanks for smoking Sam. At least somebody has the courage to do so.

Maybe the guys could work in a strip where Sam tries to quit?

Marking time, as Sam prompts Tracy into speaking for us all, as he tosses up his hands! I like it; what’s in the envelope indeed? Some whine from Vera?

I see where 436 is coming from. Personally, I don’t have the courage to smoke.

    @ niteshsde09That’s a real onfortunate personal experience.

I worked in an office that allowed SMOKING all my life - retired some 15 years now. Ceased smoking 10 years ago but don’t know of anyone among 400 or so that ever has cancer

Not an advocate for smoking, but the oldest woman in the Islands at - 109 , a Carib Indian eat fish and smoked raw tobacco everyday of her life. Thought her life style was the best !

Could be a “gene” thing (?), but are you SURE your’s was the cause of cancer ? Auto and rechanical exhauste is often far more toxic !

Remember the Tracyverse is not governed by the same laws as the universe we live in. Perhaps smoking in the workplace is still legal because it doesn’t cause cancer in that reality.

My mom was a respiratory therapist. I can still remember when she was going to the University and would bring home her homework. The slice of human lung between the two plates of glass. The non-smokers looked like a piece of deli ham, the smokers looked like black Swiss cheese. For a young kid (I think I was in middle school at the time) that really made an impression.I can still remember her description of how just one puff from a cigarette will paralyze the cilia in your bronchial tubes preventing them from removing the dust and mucus that builds up, this is why smokers cough so much.A smoker only exhales 10% of what they inhale, because the lungs are wet, the particles from the smoke stick to them. The other 90% of that crud they smoke stays in the lungs. (YUCK)Mom didn’t need to tell me any more than that. I don’t think she even bothered telling me about cancer. Just knowing that my lungs would look like that was more than enough for me.

Some think the smoking makes the strip more realistic. I barely notice, one way or the other. My husband observed some autopsies on smokers and that was enough for him.People get sick from second hand smoke and we all pay in higher medical costs. That’s why there are laws.

It is a comic strip folks. So Sam smokes – so what. I don’t think that a couple of characters in Dick Tracy smoking is going to make a reader start smoking.

In Dennis the Menace, his dad smoked a pipe.

On TV, even Andy Taylor of Mayberry was seen having a smoke every now and then.

Let’s just enjoy the story without having “Big Brother” watching over us.

But, as it has been pointed out before, this version of the strip has no specific time period.Like Batman The Animated Series, Pulp Fiction, Give ’Em Hell Malone, Just to name a few.The reason stories have been full of anachronisms.Keeping the story in the present tense but, still having a crime noir feel.

FYI, for anyone who hasn’t seen it I do recommend GIVE ‘EM HELL MALONE!Best low budget movie I’ve seen in a while.
