And, yet another fascinating and informative piece by Sgt. Jim Doherty. Surely I am not alone in saying that Sunday is my favorite day for Dick Tracy! Thank You to Mike. Joe, Shelley, Shane, and all others involved for Sundays and every day!
“Take no prisoners.” So, Wilhelm evidently shoots to kill. Sam and the gang will be prepared for the squad, though. Like i says in the intro, “time for action in Simmons Corners.” (I wonder what happened to the phone lines.)

His time is up, his clock is about to be punched, he is going down.Who stands tall? Tracy; Sam; the Asp (shudder) ; and Punjab, tallest of all. Fritz Ann will safeguard Annie, and Oliver will stand in reserve and as lookout, in case Axel has a second squad of losers….
@Pequod77I love your poetry! And I love this series! And I love the pace which really allows the sheer quality and the depth of the imagination, the texture and the art to shine in every panel.
If comics could use Hollywood sound libraries, I’d imagine the Tracy crew would be cueing up a Wilhelm Scream: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream
Enjoyed today’s Hall of Fame entry. After 9/11, we’ve become aware of the heroism of our first responders, but we seldom think – or hear – of the similar acts of bravery elsewhere. Thanks, Jim.
PQ, just when I think you have hit the Acme of poetry, you pull one more out! Outstanding!I wonder if Axel’s “army” is equipped “1944-style”. If so, they are no match for “Diet Smith” – drones, bots, and all that good stuff.
After all these months this has become a bit of a cliche but I still can’t get over how much fun this strip has become. I have been reading Dick Tracy, off and on, since 1970 and in my humble opinion, it has never looked or read better. Sigh, it’s a bit of a shame more newspapers are not carrying adventure strips anymore. This one certainly deserves the coverage.
Fundamental police work, via the hole in the wall, meets high tech detection with the Wrist Wizard. Tracy shares with Sam Axel’s diabolical “take no prisoners” plan. This is not the first time we’ve seen a villainous visage in the form of a hologram. Fans of the delightful young crime-stopper, Honeymoon, will recall her own Wrist Wizard casting a flying Phishface.
Maybe Honeymoon and “Aunt” Mysta are having a milkshake in Tracyville about now. Elsewhere, on Thunder Island, Axel may well be surprised at the outcome of Wilhelm’s little “military exercise.” More crossover goodness from Team Tracy. Another deserving member of “Tracy’s Hall of Fame.” Well done, Sgt. Doherty. In addition to terrorism and heroism in Mumbai, there is devastating poverty, as revealed in riveting fashion by investigative storyteller Katherine Boo in Behind the Beautiful Forevers. .Thanks to Donnie Pitchford, cpalmeresq, DoctorWho55, Night-Gaunt49 (Go, Jonny Quest!), Gweedo (Go, Barney Miller!), Willy007, Neil Wick, VistaBill, rvldejung, davidf42, ave09, Starman1948 and Morrow for the kind words. Very much appreciated!
Yesterday, responding to my post Ray Toler opined :
" I don’t believe Axel’s sentries anticipated Tracy’s arrival. I believe that they caught Tracy, drugged him, put him in the hospital and kept him unconscious all the while subcounciously brainwashing him until clothing and a back story could be developed to explain his presence in Simmons Corners."-—————————————————————————————————
I really do appreciate your comments Ray, but just like me, you don’t ‘KNOW’ what actually happened !. The Author hasn’t told us, left us yet another mystery of sorts, on a spot, no explanations, only to draw the best ‘conclusions’ we can, from the thin evidence and clues he’s left behind.
I’ve never felt ‘COMFORTABLE’ when Authors leave readers to manufacture a rationale of how some ‘Oddity’ appearing in the strip “happened” – and here one, ever so challenging. Scenarios, like placing the character – 70 years back into the past ! Tonight, seen safely in his boat, then the next day - in a hospital bed ! (?) 1944 Calendar ? - To simulate a ‘Time Jump’ ?
It doesn’t help, that this particular mystery’s - been “hanging out” there, for over 12 weeks, while another emerging (or rather, ‘planted’ one) back then -‘Time Travel’, was debunked by Axel’s telephone call to his Superiors only 2 weeks ago, some ten weeks after the Vitamin F introduction - so, lets call it a - misdirect ;- )
(This is not about THAT, but the Financial Costs of staging a 1944 village ‘atmosphere’ - must be, a Staggeringly Large one ? Let’s see if later, we get a valid answer - simply finding that ‘not much’ had changed in the village (at time of leasing), is not an appropriate answer - for several reasons. In the end, will it prove, a ‘rational’ outlay (?)And not just something to HYPE readers that Time Travel might be - around the corner ! ;- )
I agree, that Tracy was captured and went through the ‘mind conditioning’ process you describe. Our assumptions differ only on whether Axel’s ‘intelligence’ was such, that the Tracy arrival was “expected”
A few things seemed to “hint” that he - was expected :
1) A ready, ‘working’ (paint designated) Vintage Police Car -2) Anticipation - that a policeman would eventually arrive, so - have uniforms, caps, billy-sticks, even a recognizable yellow – Dick Tracy style hat and red striped tie (?). All apparel correctly sized, (Not for someone like a Punjab) but rather some-one built more like a Dick Tracy -Not ‘take-off-a-shelf’ ITEMS, in a Wartime (1944) village. Seems they’d have to be obtained outside ?3) The efficiency (fore-knowledge?) to find the correct Boating Facility for the returning boat and the ‘exact’ area there, where Tracy’s should be docked (?) So as, not to arouse suspicion that some-things amiss4) Easily, ‘knowing’ which parked, motor vehicle Tracy owned - to drive it off - and dump it !
His apparently easy capture and all the above suggest a well oiled, prepared operation. Expected ? Quite possible !
YES ! All the above are just “assumptions” - but not without Merit. Reasoned ‘indicators’, pointed enough to suggest some ‘foreknowledge’ of his coming ! (?)
Thank you Sydney. You got it, spot on!Let me also say that I don’t belittle or try to dismiss the dangers of smoking or other life threatening habits. However the reactions to such things can sometime go extremely overboard to the extent of the ridiculous. Let me also say congratulations on beating your health ordeal and although I don’t know you, I am very, very glad you are here today to share your experience with all.

Despite joyous reunion, for reminiscing there’s no time
Must get undercover, rescue victims of foul crime.
There’s a barn at Silo’s farm, Punjab squeezes inside
Rest another matter, men of action hate to hide.
Sam dreams across Atlantic Ocean: travel to the past
Rip open gates of all death camps, end suffering so vast.
Sun comes up on a brand new day, Annie chooses a red dress
The team ready for rough and tumble, the outcome none can guess
Axel finds the phone lines out, his squadron sent well-armed
To travel north, secure Kenyon, see all intruders harmed
With deadly force, no mercy, of course, render the nest clean
No prisoners shall be taken, Wilhelm knows just what this means.
There’s a hole in the wall where sights and sounds slip through
Tracy shares the plot with Sam, who knows just what to do.
