That logo doesn’t remind me of Pan Am. Maybe a new company took the name but couldn’t use the logo…

I’m a huge fan of the Academy Awards and I have to talk about tonight’s award show and Warren “Dick Tracy” Beatty’s part in it. I’ve figured out what happened by reading various sources and here is my forensic analysis.

Beatty and co-star Faye Dunaway presented the award for Best Picture in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of their leading roles in Bonnie and Clyde (which was nominated for Best Picture of 1967).

Beatty opened the envelope and was confused when the card inside said “Emma Stone / La La Land.” The best actress award had just been given to Emma Stone. He pulled out the card and looked into the envelope to see is anything else was in there, but nothing was. As Dunaway looked on, he announced, “The Academy Award …” and stuck his hand into the envelope searching for something that made more sense. Then, he continued, “… for best picture …” Another pause and Dunaway said something like, “come on, you’re taking too long.” He showed her the card and she instantly announced, “La La Land.”

Tied for most nominations of all time and widely favoured to win, it was natural to think it might have won. As the “winners” from La La Land started to make their speeches, two or three people could be seen hurrying across the stage behind them. Finally a man wearing a headset came out with another envelope and he grabbed the envelope that one of the crowd of La La Land people was holding.

They then announced that Moonlight was the real winner. To prove that they weren’t joking, they held up the card that said:

    “Moonlight”

Adele Romanski, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, Producers

(in small print at the bottom): Best Picture

    (continued)

Looking at the commissioner, I now know what happened to at least one member of the Lollipop Guild.

All danger is past…for Commissioner Dolan and Sammy. The Spirit on the other hand…

I am still wondering why Perenelle did not go ballistics on Dolan when he was smoking near her.

There wasn’t any real clue that Carrion is using stolen money and that Spirit and Dolan suspected him.

So Sammy was just a plain tourist on this one.

Now that Carrion is taken cared of, I guess it is the Dragon Lady’s turn to make a mess of the auction.

It is either her or the 5th bidder in case the unknown bidder is not The Spirit.

It would seem that Dolan and Sammy are out of the story while the Spirit is still in. I don’t expect a dramatic escape by Carrion and Julia (she always has that “what’s dead; I’m hungry” look about her). The auction is apparently going forward, and the Spirit (with U.N. backing money) was apparently the mysterious Fifth Bidder all along.

Do I hear the sizzle of more fish frying?

A single engine commercial jetliner? I thought Korean War vintage fighter planes were the last of the single jets.

Note to all: don’t comment on Sammy’s cap, as it will be automatically deleted. Someone is way too PC sensitive!

On January 11, Spirit seemed surprised to see Mr. Carrion arrive as one of the bidders. Was he feigning surprise, just as Tracy was of Brush’s appearance?

Here is a Newsarama post about next week’s events honoring Will Eisner at Portland State University:

I added a post about the Tracy-Spirit storyline; maybe it will attract a few Spirit fans.
