Havoc: I don't know what that nimrod's up to, but I'm going to find out... Man: No need, boss! My source was clear on that point - the intel is solid! Red Rascal is a genuine American hero! Havoc: Okay, how much is he paying you? Man: Who? What do you mean? In U.S. dollars?

Nimrod was a mighty hunter; Redfern should not be permitted anywhere near a weapon!

… or over the Hindu Kush, depending.

At first glance thought it said, “The intel is SOUP”? Must be the three-bean variety because he’s certainly blowing smoke out his backside.

Try to cover for a bud a see where it gets ya!

Looked like “soup” to me, too.

“Soup”? Apparently some posters need a new monitor with better resolution.
Anyway, if GT wanted this strip to adhere to the barest thread of real-world reality, the “Sorkh Razil” story had to start breaking up.

Uh, Joe, Sheik, he was a “mighty hunter AGAINST GOD.” That would add up to stupid in most books. Actually a very apt comparison if Rascal’s deeds are as advertised since Nim’s the source of the first “world-wide” alliance stories.

Yup, definitely SOUP. No way it could be SOLID.
Our intel was SOUP a lot too.

Joe-Allen and others,,,,,,,, Now you have me wondering why my father called me “Nimrod”??????? I always thought it was because of my marksmanship with firearms.

So!! The source is a monetary source. And so the legend grows!
Wiki has a lot of great stuff on Nimrod. Check it out. Nimrod was the King that supposedly build the Tower of Babel.
From the perspective of Jewish and Christian theologians this was a fairly stupid thing to do.
For this presumption of power, according to Hebrew and Christian scripture, “God” confused everybody’s speech so they couldn’t understand each other.
Don’t fool with God or he’ll get ya.
My dad would call me Nimrod when I did something particularly stupid. That was fifty years ago. I don’t think Nimrod is used that much anymore. Or is it?

imo most people who use the word nimrod have no idea of the biblical reference, nor do they care or even think about it. it’s just another word for an idiot.

Finally a plausible explanation.

The Bugs Bunny link sounds plausible. So Nimrod is used in the same way that people use the name Einstein.
Justice22 over 14 years ago
/\ Funny, Dad called me Einstein too.

Nimrod was first used on this forum on 03/28/10.

Sounds like Alex Williams is making references to R. Crumb’s Illustrated Book of Genesis, (it’s supposed to be based on the truth) that emphasizes a fierce bi-polar god, spread seed, tear it down, spread seed, tear it down, ad naseum. Not to mention they lived for centuries, Sarah was 90 yo when she had her first kid.
Nimrod, nitwit, nincompoop, numb nuts, noodles for brains, enough of the N slurs.

How much is he being paid?
Not enough to fool Havoc, apparently…

Freeholder, Check another translation. NIV says, Mighty Hunter “Before the Lord,” as in front of the Lord. Not against the Lord.
ChuckTrent64 over 14 years ago
Don’t go to Watersmeet, Michigan (UP) and use the name, Nimrod in vain. There are a lot of Mighty Hunters up there who are proud of that name. I hope Mr. Trudeau will cease using it in a negative sense.

“I think it was a Bugs Bunny cartoon when Elmer took a shot at him and missed and Bugs said, “You Nimrod”, that it became a mild humorous insult.”
I agree. The creators of Looney Toons @ Warner Brothers were very literate, and I suspect that Bugs’ comment was intended to sarcastically demean Elmer as SUCH a mighty hunter. r
FriscoLou over 14 years ago
rgvinet has offered the clearest explanation yet.
ChuckTrent64 over 14 years ago
Makes sense! That si sarcasm. In those days a lot more people would have gotten it too, because the public was a lot more biblically literate.
