Must Doonesbury put the characters at Starbucks?

Hey! You can’t give SBUX a free plug! I often wondered about those blue coffee cups seen on Seinfeld and other programs (I think even the Sopranos had them, recall the episode where Chris beats up a broker). A few months ago I heard on NPR whom those cups came from, but I forgot.

Most of them would probably like to switch to Peet’s, but the nannybots would have a cow if only the first few letters could be read from the side of a mug.

Thanks, Rone, but, my god, what a poorly written article! If that represents the writing & thinking abilities of the typical Wesleyan student, then the place is going downhill almost as quickly as did Walden College.

Radfish, what a great little article! It makes me want to hold one of those cups. I long to visit a New York diner. I recall having had them, and I didn’t fully appreciate them. Let’s return to the days of Anthoras and away from the excessive & overpriced “grande”s & “venti”s.

The writer of the article cited by rone has a problem with the use of adjectives and adverbs. “most unique” - it almost hurts to type that - is a good example of that difficulty. There’s no denying the passion with which the writer addresses the subject of the article.

I too found that seeing the adjective “unique” preceded by an adverb was akin to hearing a fingernail drawn down a blackboard. I thought long and hard to find a substitution that I could make whenever I saw this. I came up with two results:

Valid adverbs: “truly” and “not”. In other words, it is ok to state whether the world “unique” is true or false. That’s really what the problem is. A logical object has only two values, and no more. It is or it isn’t. It can’t be “more” or “most”.

Substitute the word “unusual”, which I find enormously comforting. As soon as I thought of it, I realized that that’s what the person really wants to say. They don’t seem to understand that “unique” means like nothing else in the world.

Hope I have helped to pass that comfort along to somebody else to whom it also matters.

^Huh? Oh well; SB is just about everywhere, so not surprising it would be used (hardly ‘product placement’ if it’s so ubiquitous).
