Yeah, but how good was the burger?

-Domestic violence is funny when the husband is on the receiving end.

Seagull,There’s no symmetry here… just because the Republicans have a war on women the Dems don’t have to have a war on men.

Why don’t the Democrats speak out about the capitol gains loophole? The Republicans are greedy bastards, the Democrats are evil, that’s why.

The capitol gains loophole is what the Supreme Court widened last week in the McCutheon case. The capital gains loophole is the 0%, 15%, and 25% rates on capital gains.

There may have been a bit of sarcasm going on here. Everyone who says they are going to kill someone doesn’t mean it. I think it highly unlikely that GT would ever say that domestic violence is ok. No matter who is on the receiving end.

‘My Wife, I think I’ll keep her’ was a line from a tv commercial of the time. I don’t remember the product, though. Do remember this strip.

Wow. I don’t think I have ever seen more clichés, stereotyping, logical fallacies, and misspellings (unintentionally) packed into a smaller space.

When my first husband hit me, he said it was to make me a better wife. When I snapped one day and went after him, my mother stopped me and I said after it would have made him a much better person if he were buried (and at the time I wasn’t fussy about whether or not he was alive at the time). Mind you, this happened about 40 years ago, so it’s all water under the bridge now…

I remember Joanie’s line in the final panel as being – “I creamed him with a waffle iron.” Am I mistaken, or did Trudeau re-write this for a modern audience?

During supper one night, my mom said something my dad didn’t like, and he balled up his fist and hit her on the arm, hard. Not funny. She had grown up with five brothers, and reflexively hit him in the nose, bloodying it with the edge of his glasses. Funny in the telling (for me), but not at the time. My last image from that is that she had a napkin and was helping him wipe off the blood. I don’t recall his ever hitting her again.

Actually, if you read the original strips featuring Joanie’s husband, he comes off more as an ethnic Catholic as far as ancestry – my impression was a shanty Irishman with some hillbilly in him.

    Just sayin’ . . . ;)

@Al S.That was an obnoxious commercial. It was demeaning to women and had no business being on the air. I can also say the same for Calgon laundry addative that used the tag line “ancient Chinese secret.”

@Al S.I’ll be watching.-As for my original post, there is nothing funny about domestic violence. The affect it has on children who are witness to it is devastating. How did J.J. respond when she saw her father with a broken nose?Did the father tell her daughter a lie and say he tripped and fell? Was J.J. happy to see her mother leave and the tensions in the house subside?

At least he didn’t use Chad Everett’s infamous remark: “My wife is the most beautiful animal I own.”

@dookHere is the commercial:-http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BJP5f-fsHrs-Put yourself in the position of the actors playing the owners of the laundry. They may have been born and raised in the US. Probably are well educated and yet they are reduced to a stereotype.

People in schools have to use their brains and understand nuance to get through each day. We could not function otherwise. Zero tolerance is how kids get suspended for pointing a finger as a gun. Zero tolerance doesn’t work very well.

@DavidHuieGreenAsk any actor (except for Jennifer Lawrence) and they will tell you they did work of which they are not proud.

This is my favorite Doonesbury strip of all time. And I remember that commercial, one of the many “you are only a real woman if you are a perfect housewife and housekeeper” ones, which thankfully have disappeared.

At the time, this was a direct quote from a very popular commercial for Wesson oil and how it let the little woman make perfect french fries for her guy.

Yeah, now it’s inappropriate. When the strip was written, attitudes were so much different. Amazing how far we’ve progressed (Thankfully)

-Limosine libral nimbys-By the way, the acronym ‘nimby’ stands for “Not In My Backyard.” What, exactly, are you accusing ‘limosine librals’ (whatever that is) of not wanting in their backyards? WASP men?
