Years ago, when I was a grad student, a couple friends had problems with unethical doctoral advisers, who wanted (in one case) for the doctoral candidate to write the next chapter of his book (for no attribution), one who withheld mentoring and approval to keep his head count of advisees high. This sort of thing, as with everything else, works both ways.
