One year for Xmas my dad gave our doxie a basketball. It didn’t take him long to tear a strip loose so he could carry it around and bring it back for fetch. He got a new one every year after.

I call my female Abby as “Abbapig” She eats VERY fast, snorting like a pig as she does. My male dog Cooper does not do that. Abby demands her supper so much she will jump up to the counter constantly til she gets it. She is small but her head clears the kitchen counter. If something is on the counter, she can grab it when she jumps. She is a MINI dachshund.

We think one of our mutts is half dachshund, he sure eats like one.

Hildy and Lindy were very desultory when it was just them. It wasn’t “my bowl” and “your bowl,” side by side in the kitchen; it was “our first bowl” and “our second bowl.” Lindy would take about half a mouthful into the dining room, line the pieces up on the floor, and eat them one by one. Hildy would try to do that, but crunch them on the way. But slowly.

Then we got Misty. She had been raised in a puppy mill, where she had to eat quick or go hungry. Hildy likewise became a little vacuum cleaner; Lindy would guard hers (we started feeding her on a cheap blanket on the end of the couch) so she could eat even more slowly. As our pack grew to four (Misty died, then we got Angel and Sadie), we had to feed everybody in separate spaces – Lindy on the couch, Hildy in the kitchen, and Angel and Sadie in their crates.

Lindy and Angel especially enjoyed Dachshund Ball – fetch the ball and don’t give it back.

If you give my dog two tennis balls at the same time, he will hold one in his mouth and dribble the other one around the floor with his front feet. He’d make a great soccer player.
