the rule in my house is simple: if somebody else fills your plate, you’re not obliged to eat it all. if you fill your own plate (or take second helpings), you’re obliged to eat it all. This is why I give my children a small portion at first, and then let them decide whether they want a second portion or not
That made sense when I was one of three boys in a poor military service family. Today my plate is much bigger and I need to push it away before I finish.

I needed room in the fridge, so I had to finish off the leftovers.

The sin of gluttony originally referred to the hoarding of things beyond what you actually needed, things like property, wealth, and yes, food.

I had three older brothers, I didn’t have to worry about gluttony, just starvation.

My youngest brother didn’t like broccoli. “You’re sitting there until you finish it, young man!” He would still be there the next morning…

Welcome to America. I never apologize for good eating, but I sometimes “regret” eating to good.

Depression days food was cherished because it was scarce for some. Gardens trended!

Growing up I got the ‘people in China are starving’ bit, then I grew up and said that’s their problem.

The “starving children in China” was brought up anytime food was left on our plates.
