Creativity above and beyond the rubric requirements is fine, but at the core should include all the elements in the rubric. Colin’s mother is wrong here.
I have over 35 years of public school classroom experience. I HAVE had parents come in questioning discipline issues, but I have NEVER had a parent come in about a grade issue.
Would following the instructions have prevented creativity or simply been an added enhancement? It seems like they failed to read the instructions and now instead of accepting the consequences she is trying to justify her mistake. My sympathy goes to the teacher.

Maybe Colin’s mother should admit neither of them read the provided rubric.

To the teacher, following her orders are more important than creativity.

When you grade by the approved rubric some parents may complain but they can’t accuse you of bias, subjectivity or sue.

Given what was on that “rubric,” I think the teacher wanted to check off the items instead of thinking.
