Look at the quality of the artwork in this. Look at the quality of the writing and visual presentation, that has me hooked after two days. It’s two or three orders of magnitude above Neathery’s earlier work, Ed Deadeye. He is a mature, consummate professional. He is producing solid gold graphic narrative. We lucky people are seeing it as it unfolds, the moment it first hits the screen. Watch what happens to Endtown in the coming twelve months, and get ready to say: “I was there when people hardly knew about it.”
Well, it is definitely pre-war, considering they are outside and there are trees and such about.
I’m going to guess this is Holly here, and the reason she’s in the back seat is because the twins occupying her uterus make her feel more comfortable back there than in the front.
To add to Jenner’s comments about the artwork here…. I think this “realistic” style (humans not presented as caricatures, different line style) are showing us a flashback played in human memory. Certain details are sharpened. This could be Holly…and if so this means we are in for more heartache. There was a baby lost at one time….To contrast with Flask’s flashback…we were looking back at her terrible Topsider life, and faces were rarely shown in them (including that of her lover), and I believe that was because they were surpressed even in her memories as being too painful. But…what do I know? :-)
Oh the artwork here! Evocative setting in the deep woods, the determined do-gooder coupled with a fearful female. Here I am with a hundred of my co-travelers, about to get “Neatherized”…willingly and repeatedly. I am aquiver with suppressed joy.Who are these two? Well…Linda told the Topsiders that her settlement was Hillside. Would need a profile shot to know if this was Linda.
Looking at the cars, I would say we are in the mid 50’s may be between 1953 and 1959 or so.
The closets we came to lobbing nukes at each other was about 1962. So I say in End Town universe we are about 5 to 10 years before the virus and the war.
Love the Alfred Hitchcock look about this… Great Details.
I really want it to be Holly because I’ve been craving her backstory ever since we met her, and I swear I can see Holly in that face. The only thing that nags at the back of my brain is how Wally talked about being so spooked when looking in a mirror because even the eyes weren’t his. But mutations can also be very individualistic. Flask was able to pass as a topsider fairly well (except for the pinky) something Linda could never hope to do. So we’re back to “only Aaron knows for sure” right now. Bottom line: I look at that face above and it screams “Holly!” ;-)
Looking carefully at panel 4 it appears that ‘Holly’ is actually sitting in the front seat; it is Lyn that is leaning forward croaching over the steering wheel.
@Jenner, Dear friend I sincerely hope you are just speculating about Aaron’s future and not holding out on us:)
I agree – that’s Holly, she’s in the front seat, Lyn will soon be nil (nyL), hope Jenner is right, hope DAD is right (this is Holly’s back story) and last but not least Aaron deserves the respect and money.
I started the Flask thing….I based it on the profile. Now that I see full face. I also believe it is Holly. Maybe this is how she lost the baby. Can’t tell yet. This may be a Holly past dream while sleeping out in the ruins somewhere. As for stopping or not stopping being a law enforcement officer the worse thing I would hate to hear laying in the ditch off in the dark bleeding to death is for the vehicle to stop then drive off. I would prefer someone with no experience coming to check or aid over just driving away to find a phone. They don’t look like they have cell phones.I am not advocating running around in the woods but check as far as you light will allow, listen to calls for help, and like one poster said use the radio if it is not broken. If it is…..take care….someone willing to destroy a radio will probably hurt you…..so be observant and ready to flee or fight. Its not vigilante if you stop to help.Just be ready to run if necessary. If this is early Endtown maybe at the offset of the virus problem which did begin before the war…….monsters may be lurking about.Officer on patrol: “Was that Bigfoot just running across the road?”Partner: “I dunno grab those Jack Links Jerky snacks and let’s go mess with him.” (Rights Reserved)
Very true. It’s important to remember that this world (and Hillside in particular) is a creation of Aaron’s. It’s filled with 50’s fashions and classic cars next to futuristic weapons and incredible technology. It is obviously inspired by our world since it is such an outstanding vehicle for displaying the nearly endless spectrum of human emotions and interactions, but this is the Universe Neathery; and what a fantastic universe it is. ;-)
Its not unheard of for “Endtown” to contain scenes from a parallel reality. Its likely that Philomena’s scene as the Dutchess involved her and an alternative version of Marx creating somebody else’s Endtown. Still, Occam’s Razor suggests that we consider this to be an earlier scene in Endtown’s reality until something suggests otherwise. Fewer assumptions that way.
I’m inclined to think that, despite what I said above about the eyes, it’s actually two previously-unseen characters—-which proves nothing. Time (and Mr. Neathery) will tell, I hope.
The Eisner Awards are named after Will Eisner, 1940’s-50’s comic artist and creator of The Spirit. They’re the biggest awards in cartooning that I know of. According to the Awards website, the judges for 2014 have been named, and the guidelines for nominations will be announced in January. The deadline for nominations will be March and the nominees will be named in April.
I would like to think this is Holly. So many ways it could go. We only know that we are somewhere in or around Hillside. Beautiful Art work Mr. Neathery.!!!

It was the ‘50s. People were nicer back then, and more likely to offer help when needed. There’s a reason those kinds of people don’t exist anymore.

Ooops! Not Sam. Yeah could be ‘proto Holly’ and even ‘proto Wally’. Or even where Holly and Wally have ended up.

This is apparently a time when people didn’t expect real monsters existed, so of course Lyn is going to investigate.but we know better mwah ha ha

I’m guessing this is a younger Holly. She told Wally that she had lost a lot of people over the years. This may be one of the first.
