We still don’t know yet what put him on the wagon. He was still hitting the bottle right up to the big riot. Maybe they cut him off when was no longer mayor?
Well, one thing is for certain… The Milk Trial proved to be very sobering for him. I still remember him holding a hostage during the riot. Keep in mind, though, the hostage had thrown a rock at him, so he deserved what he got.And let’s not forget his speech at the funeral. That was when a bear became a man.
Once the monster has been let out it is harder to put back under restraints. Also alcohol is the worst drug to use! More violence is done under the influence of alcohol than any other drug including PCP.
I wonder who “they” were—that is, the ones with the authority to give Walt the position. And also who had considered shooting him. It was the time that everything was going bad, wholesale mutations appearing, slaughter by those in biosuits. Why single out Walt as dangerous?
@ Pam Miner: You don’t have to be a Quaker to be a conscientious objector – although, during Vietnam and the draft, certain religious designations (such as Quaker) made it easier to establish the claim. // Here’s a true irony: I attended Air Force Officer Training School (OTS) with a female who was a Quaker. The first couple of weeks were rocky because she had to prove to our Flight Commander that, even though she was a Quaker, she still wanted to join the Air Force – which ultimately meant that she wanted to fight. // And no, she didn’t want to renounce her religion, either.
As someone who spent the better part of his life in the military, I will say that one thing I miss is the draft. Why? Because that was the way to get people into the military who didn’t want to be there, who may have had a much different perspective on the mission than career military people might have. // Nothing against career military people, per se; after all, I was one. // But I remember a theme from almost all the military schools that I attended: The best military officers are those who realize that they are making life and death decisions regarding real people. Officers who, if the choice is laid before them, will choose the path that costs the least number of human lives. And believe it or not, most officers are that way.
Those people under us all have parents, some have wives and their own children. We also may have wives and children. And the last thing we would want is for our children to die at all, let alone needlessly.
So who is mayor now? We know it’s not Walt…we know his opponent in the last election was Jake Jackrabbit…but did JJ win? Or did other events intervene?

The world has always feared its saints and heroes. That’s why we name them “saints” and “heroes” posthumously.

A good officer – and a good NCO – truly cares more about individual lives a lot more than I think we are given credit for.
