The strangest part of it all is that such position is indeed vacant!

So that’s where they’re coming from. Someone is hiring them and placing them in positions of power.

There will be a lot of competition available for this position after the next election.

We had a village idiot in our neighborhood when I was a kid. He had been messed up on moonshine and in addition to being mentally defective had a condition called “jackleg” where his leg would suddenly get a spasm where he’d have to stop until it settled down. Sometimes kids would follow him and imitate his jackleg but mostly he was an ok guy who would smile and do his best.

The village idiot or the town drunk were the ones who often had access to almost everywhere, since few people paid much attention to them. Thus, they knew what was going on around town, and usually unphased by the BS. As Sir Isaac pointed out, they were generally decent folks, if you took the time to get to know them.
