The worst part of getting / being older, is that I am saying goodbye to many friends and relatives. I don’t want to be alone. Covid is really making a bad age worse.

That’s not the worst. The worst is having a conversation with an old friend and realizing that they are losing it cognitively. And, it isn’t just that they are— it’s the fact that they obviously don’t realize it— and what if I am too and don’t realize it. I don’t mind when I die, but I really would like to take all my marbles with me.

Generally if you are able to think about if you are losing it, you haven’t. Like if you forget a word and then it either comes to you or someone else says it, you think – oh yeah! But if someone gives you the right word and it’s not familiar any more, then you are on a slope. Depending on the type of dementia, it could be a very long, slow, gentle slope that isn’t too bad at all. Many people with early dementia are aware of it and some are even able to find humor in it. Occasional testing is recommended if you really want to be sure, or just are worried about it.
