Elizabeth: Michael, this is such a cool place! Michael: I was really lucky to get it, Liz! It belongs to a friend of Lawrence's. He's a botanist and he's going to be away for two years. Elizabeth: How can you afford to live here? Michael: I'm getting an amazing deal on the rent. All I have to do is maintain the property, pay his bills, forward his mail...and look after his plants.

In a previous strip, he had to pay the rent too, and I was wondering how he afforded that.

4/7/2000: Michael said to Weed: “All he (the owner) asked me to do was Pay the Rent, keep the place clean, and water the plants.” Seems the story has changed a bit.

He’s summarizing both times. Maybe the story is not exactly the same, but the basics are there and I’m sure he knows what’s expected of him.
