I gave one of my goddaughters a toy trumpet when she was about three. She is a professional standard cornet player now playing in bands that regularly compete and win internationally. I like to think the two are connected!
My Mother-In-Law, God rest her, gave my boys and electronic toy that would make a noise at about the time their attention had turned to something else, drawing them right back in to the noisemaker. The second time the batteries ran down, I told them it was broke. Daddy can’t fix it…
Toys that make noise are too easy (and too easy to be “broken” during the night when the kid is asleep). I bide my time until the kid gets minimal reading skills and then they get the “Big Book of Elephant Jokes”. Hours of fun for the entire family.
When I had young nieces and nephews, each Christmas, I hunted for the most annoyingly noisy toy to send home with them. One year, it was those echo microphones that didn’t need batteries. The only flaw was that the parents eventually learned they could be disabled with an ice pick. The next year, it was slide whistles, you know, like Sideshow Bob uses. Perfect, especially with multiple kids going at it.
Years ago, Mom did shopping for gifts for underprivileged children, and most of the time their parents or foster parents or orphanage worker or whatever would give fairly relevant information – needs a jacket, wears size medium, likes comic books, etc. She got one family of four siblings where whoever filled out the form simply put “age-appropriate toys and clothing” for all four kids. No details about whether one is small for her age or another’s favorite color is green or interests or anything.
So after much deliberation, Mom got them like an electronic drum kit, a keyboard, and other simple, but loud, items of that nature.
My brother gave my daughter this noisy toy. So when he came over one time I told her that he really likes that toy so play with it alot around him. By the end of the visit he understood and did not gift anymore loud, annoying toys anymore.

Lordy, I remember those days! First thing I did was to de-noise all toys including the dogs toys! LOL
