Caulfield: Fractions just don't seem like something I'll use the rest of my life.
I taught Introductory Statistics for a few years and I always began the course telling the students: “You’re now going to learn the most useful mathematics you’ve had since you took arithmetic”.
Japanese has a plethora of descriptive double words like this. Barabara is rattle; patapata is flapping; hisohiso is whispering; buchibuchi is ripping, and the list goes on. Note: these repeating words are not only for sounds, but for other types of adjectives as well.
He’ll get real interested in fractions as soon as he realizes that the fraction of your nominal salary that you actually take home is a major factor in your well-being.

If two apples cost $1, how much will 3 apples cost? That’s algebra. And fractions. Both are useful in real life.

If Chi Chi Rodriguez and Zsa Zsa Gabor had had a child, would she have been Shirley “Cha Cha” Muldowney?
