Girl: By Christmas eve, the North Pole hasn't seen the sun for 11 weeks. And won't see it for another 12. And yet you see all these pictures of elvesloading the sleigh in natural light.
Frazz: You are skeptical.
Girl: Also, they tend to be cartoons.

Actually, Santa’s place is at the South Pole, located on an actual continent, not on drifting ice, and where there’s constant sunlight this time of year. It’s an intentional misconception that he’s at the North Pole, to conceal his location.

In any case, she’s a cartoon, so why is she prejudiced against them?

OK, smart-ass scientific stuff here. Be forewarned..Actually, the south geographic pole IS the magnetic north pole..
The north pole of a magnet is defined as the pole that points towards geographic north..Like magnetic poles repel, opposites attract, so the north pole of a compass magnet points to a south magnetic pole..So the south pole already has a true north pole..I needed to figure out some stuff at work one time and it’s stuck with me since..End of weird science stuff for today…..8^)

So now I have to wonder — if the dominant explorers/exploiters of history had come from the southern hemisphere (Australia, or maybe South America) would our globes/maps have that part of the world at the top? Astronomically it really is arbitrary after all.

I believe the Chinese used to put south at the top of maps, too. Also, @Carl42SG, there’s no reason to put the nearer pole at the top. Plus, the word “orient” refers to putting east at the top.

When my brother and I reached the questioning age, before we could outright ask, my mother sat us down. She said, “As long as you believe, Santa comes.” I, for one, still believe!
