Frazz by Jef Mallett for January 11, 2016
Transcript:
Mr. Spaetzle: You're still swimming outside? Frazz: Well, just a polar plunge or two now. I need any opportunity I can get to amp up my cold-water tolerance, because no way am I DNFing that Boston Harbor swim again. Mr. Spaetzle: What is he on? Miss Plainwell: A mission.

Love that dirty water…!

Miss Plainwell looks very impressed by Frazz’s training while Mr.Spatzle looks understandably confused.

I should have guessed that Frazz is a Fedora Linux guy!

Thx for explaining. I was going to look it up. Apparently plans are in the works for another swim. This time I hope he F’s.

Frazz, you’re too skinny to deal with cold safely.

Deciding you need to do something difficult, uncomfortable and potentially dangerous just to prove you can is one of the more common forms of Male Pattern Madness. If Frazz wants to do a long swim in cold, polluted water in order to prove something to himself, that’s OK with me. It beats the heII out of invading another country just to prove you’re studlier than your dad…

I don’t even want to ride my bike when it’s below 45. Of course, no amount of “acclimation” is going to counteract Raynaud’s. Cold and I are simply incompatible.

These are the guides about how to criticize on the internet from Buzzfeed.com
1. No HatersOK, deep breath – here’s what that means.
Meh and snark were a big part of the early days of digital media, but they’re the default poses of lazy people who want to feel superior yet don’t have anything to offer. It’s not a shareable posture because most people don’t want to share boredom or contempt; it was never really fun in the first place; and it’s the lowest, least creative way of making a point that anyone ever came up with. Hate is the laziest, easiest pose for anyone to assume.
No Haters doesn’t mean “no critics” – there’s nothing wrong with being usefully critical of something. We need to be critical when it’s the right thing to do, when it’s interesting, when it adds to the story, and when we have something worthwhile to say. But we can do that with grace and understanding, and we can certainly do it without snark and vitriol.
Does this sound like a certain poster who frequents here?

No, Frazz will live forever.
After all, in this strip, like many others, characters don’t age, and how often does a cartoonist kill off his main character?

“Male Pattern Madness” — I love it!"Ditto… if I can remember it that long.

Night Gaunt, thanks so much for the definition of “DNF-ing.” I was trying to work it out in my head, but everything I came up with was way too obscene for the kindly Frazz.

Actually it is a very common NASCAR term. For those that were wrecked so badly they could not get back into the race.

My guess is that he just ignores what I said, and immediately attacks your post.

I liked bigpuma’s original comment. He said what I was feeling as I read these latest smug, self-congratulatory Frazzisms.
By the way, posting something constructively negative is not being a “troll.” We come to these forums to find likeminded people, to say “wasn’t this great today?” as well as, when it’s warranted, “wasn’t today’s strip insufferable?” Or even to be convinced of the opposite view, if someone’s argument is strong enough.

Puma: “We KNOW, already!” Yes, and it will come up again in the future, because he’s not writing the strip for everyone, it’s for those who aren’t offended by him; writing to please everyone is an impossibility; can’t be done. There is really no need for you to tell us day after day; “We KNOW, already!” If you’re tired of it, there’s an easy solution. But we already know you won’t take it.
