I’d hang around older people, many of whom were not shy about regaling others with tales of their “missteps” and commiserating with each other: “Hoo boy, remember when…” Yes, I tried to take notes!
“When I was twenty, my old man was so stupid I could hardly stand to have him around. When I turned thirty, I was astonished at how much the old fellow had learned.” Samuel Clemons, a.k.a. Mark Twain.
Frazz – you need to re-evaluate your idea of success. Labeling someone a failure because he is a janitor is elitist. We will always need janitors. It is long past time we stopped looking down our noses at them.
The society which scorns excellence in plumbing as a humble activity and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy: neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water. Did Frazz have a gold record? I’ve never known any back story about him. He seems to love his job and those kids.
