It’s typical of any era. The elderly possess a vast cornucopia of knowledge gained from experience and of information gleaned from simple observation, yet that ‘platinum mine’ of wealth is wasted – passed off as not worthy of consideration by those who have barely begun the journey.
The current ‘in-group’ will experience this same disregard, too – if they live long enough. Given the numbers of inactive hours spent on electronic distractions and the continual seeking for ephemera, I would not be surprised to see reports of a gradual decline in the average human life span, regardless of improvements in diet, health care, and medical technology.
Counting cows only worked if you were going to a new place, because if you knew where the cows and the cemeteries were, it only mattered which side of the car you were on. And of course it depended on going somewhere where there were cows and cemeteries.

I complained because I had no wi-fi until I met a man who had no sight. Get real, girl.

I’d rather read than count cows.
