I used to live in Cleveland, OH. Ice fishing is a big deal on Lake Erie. The Coast Guard would put out a notice when the ice was think enough to drive on. In the late winter they would also put out a notice when the ice was too thin to drive on. Every few years there was some Bozo who knew better, and drove his truck out anyway. When the truck started breaking through the ice he would call the Coast Guard for help.
The Coast Guard would fly their helicopter out, pick up said stupid fisherman, leave the truck, leave his ice shack and supplies. When they got back to base they would start handing out tickets: One for fishing in a closed area. One for polluting the lake with his truck. One for polluting the lake with his ice shack. An order to have his truck and shack retrieved in the spring by a salvage company. This jaunt was going to cost said stupid fisherman tens of thousands of dollars. Oh BTW, When the insurance company got the claim for the loss of the truck, they would laugh and say, “No Coverage.” So said stupid fisherman was also going to need a new truck.
You can educate ignorance, but there is no cure for stooopid.
For one thing, it’s quiet. One of the most peaceful places I’ve ever been, no hurry, no phones, nowhere to be and all the noise and racket of the outside world is shut off for a while.Plus afterward you get to eat fish.
As much as I love to fish, its going to be when the weather’s warm. I went ice fishing twice in my life. The first time was a novelty. The second time was to make sure I disliked it as much as I did the first time. That was probably 40 years ago…never did it again.

Why ice fish?
Bilan about 9 hours ago
If you ask Why?, then you must think they’re there for the fishing.

Take a boring, mind-numbing activity, then make it worse by making un-gadly cold. I do believe I would pass.

Watch the movie Grumpy Old Men to get an idea why people like ice fishing. I’m a grumpy old man, I don’t care for any kind of fishing.
