I am a proud Yankees fan. The approval of my neighbors in Maine is not required.

It IS amazing the extent to which people seem hell-bent on prohibiting others from living their lives as they see fit. It’s a symptom of systemic insecurity I think.

Like my Grand Pappy used to say, in life, a sense of humour is superior to any religion yet devised.

Our individuality is all, all, that we have. There are those who barter it for security, those who repress it for what they believe is the betterment of the whole society, but blessed in the twinkle of the morning star is the one who nurtures it and rides it in, in grace and love and wit, from peculiar station to peculiar station along life’s bittersweet route.

I asked why it was so quiet in the bar. Turns out that word was out that Flipper was terminating dormant accounts. Thirty percent didn’t want to be in the line of fire. Thirty percent didn’t want to know anything about it. Thirty percent didn’t like it, but didn’t want to see it. The other ten percent, plus me, were here. A smart guy like me, I would close the bar and put it up for sale through an agent and be on the first flight to nowhere in particular. Kelly wasn’t smart that way. She was dangerous. Nobody was going to come in here shooting. They would set a trap, like killing Uncle Pete and setting me on the case. I was starting to smell a rat. I had Kelly pour me another glass of Pied Piper and sat back to crunch some numbers. Or maybe I was walking on eggshells. I didn’t see a lot of difference at the moment. My halcyon gumshoe hiatus from the local war might be over soon. This machine definitely had too many moving parts. If I was going to throw in a spanner, I needed to find one soon.
