What if it turns out that donut is actually a spinach-filled one, and Garfield is actually experiencing a delayed reaction from it before he realizes what he just ate?
Garfield and Jon are characters with a terrific amount of potential, and yet they’re outrageously wasted on mindless gags involving nothing except food and idleness day after day after day… Why is it that we see nothing of Jon and Liz’s relationship? Where are Jon’s parents, Doc Boy, Irma, Nermal, and even Lyman, for that matter? In my opinion, it was a mistake to have Liz becoming Jon’s girlfriend, as: a) The writers went absolutely nowhere with it, and, b) It put an end to the brilliantly hilarious gags in which Jon is the biggest romantic loser on Earth; remember his pathetic phone calls to Ellen? I would have loved to see a series of strips in which Jon and Garfield go on a vacation to, say, Las Vegas, and Jon embarks on an uproarious and devastatingly unsuccessful quest to find himself a date. I just think that Garfield and Jon deserve more than these endless uninspired gags about doughnuts and pizza. They’re not one-dimensional characters and SO MUCH could be done with them if only the writers weren’t so lazy.

If there’s only one doughnut then no one stands a chance of getting it before Garfield. Not even Pooky.

Garfield is the one who needs to be on a diet and lose weight. Poky is fine-fitting.

Pooky is letting Garfield eat himself to a proper roasting weight.

Garfield, what has Dr. Liz Wilson mentioned to you about diets? They simply do not work. My doctor articulates that constantly.
