Woo hoo! And before anyone criticizes, let’s look at the disclaimer & also realize that this is a comic strip!

Very dangerous maneuver! Okay, they’re on the other side of track. WHY? (I suppose we’ll find out before long!)

Funny that both Rufus & Becky are both going, “Whew”!

Jim has the warning whistle signal correct 2 long blasts, a short blast, then another long blast of the whistle.

And the train is also going “Whoo” (more of less the same sound).

There is a scene like this in the silent movie “Intolerance,” from 1914, where a sports car races a locomotive and crosses the track in front of the train. It is done to get the governor off the train so he can stop the execution of an innocent man.

I’m thinking your average Gasoline Alley reader doesn’t drive a donkey cart.

Hmm. I love the drawing, and I really like the dual expression by both Becky and Rufus. And, of course, I am very happy Joel and Rufus are featured…. but now I am at a loss as to the reason and purpose for the crossing.

I guess we’ll find out why they did it pretty soon.

Look at Joel and Rufus – when did they manage to change seats?? Rufus always sits on Joel’s left side not the right side. At least, not when Becky is running.

Real life does not happen you leave home. Isn’t that right, high school graduates?~Polly looks like she wants to be in the action, but she is still having fun. ~Joel, you made Becky do something she was scared to do. Forty lashes, Joel!!!~Joel is definitely the only one who felt comfortable about the maneuver. Even Rufus is smart enough to question it.

When I saw that, I thought of the Tex Avery cartoon One Cab’s Family (1952)

Reader’s Note! Instead of telling us how dangerous this is, but making it look like fun, just don’t have this as part of the storyline. Either respect we know that this a comic strip and lose the editor’s note, or keep the editor’s note and show us the bloody, deadly real life result this would have produced.

I had a friend back in the 80’s who tried to beat the railroad crossing arms. He did not make it. To me this is not funny at all.
