Translation for certain Western Pennsylvanians: rubber band = gum band. (On a documentary on regional American dialects the interviewer asked a Pittsburgher if he’d ever heard another word for those stretchy things that can hold a bunch of envelopes together, and the man replied “I think some people call them rubber bands.”)
