    The heat makes the air rise over the fire. Fresh air is pulled in from all sides except the one you are blocking. So that’s where the smoke goes (unless there is a strong enough breeze to counter it).

    My neighbor insists on using his fire pit year round, burning green wood that produces acrid smoke. I would love to be able to open my windows on a temperate evening, but the house smells horrible afterwards.
