See the movie first. You’re less likely to judge the book.

I first read the book many, MANY years ago and have read it dozens of times since. I have developed my own set of characters and settings with my imagination over the years. Now I’m afraid that if I see the movie it will fall short of my expectations simply because it won’t match with what I’ve developed. I’m sure it’s a good movie in it’s own right, but I think I’ll just read the book…again!

I have also enjoyed the book many times through the years – reading it first while in grade school, and many times since. My last read was about 5 years ago now, and seeing the movie has encouraged me to dig out one of my copies and re-read the book.

I didn’t find the movie to be at odds with the book – just with some additional content opened up. Much of the license that was taken with the movie actually is introducing information which was in the Silmarilion. Yes, characters were portrayed differently from the way that I ‘know’ them in my head through the books – but that’s often the case when a beloved piece of literature is brought to film.

I see no problem with reading the book and watching the movie – and I hope that these movies will bring more people to enjoy what is truly a GREAT piece of literature.

Books and movies are two completely different art forms – with different methods of “presenting a story.” I’m such a book snob, it took me decades to learn this simple fact (many apologies to movie makers everywhere). Now, I leave the book alone until after I’ve seen the movie, or I let a year or two go by in between. It makes a huge difference in my appreciation of both.

poop. Here I’d been thinking this arc was about the superiority of written matter over TV and movies. Oh well.

Oh, yeah. I have read the book “The Hobbit” and have seen the movie “The Hobbit”. There are differences between the two. I think the movie shows the dwarves as the fighters they are while the book only talks about old battles they fought.

Noooo the movie totally ruined it. I really regret going to see it.
