The key there is the phrase “well ordered militia”. The country was so broke at the end of the Revolution that the army was disbanded; there were only about 600 officers scattered along the 13 states.
The militia behaved so badly during the War of 1812 (they “retreated” so rapidly from Washington, DC that they ran into and knocked down some of the incoming British soldiers) that the standing Army had to be reestablished. At the time, there was a discussion in Congress to repeal the passage, but we were busy stealing the continent from the people who already owned it, and we needed our guns. Remember, folks – the only good Indian is a dead Indian.
No arms no peace; or, you can take my gun when you pry it from my dead, cold hand; or, there will be a red neck behind every tree who likes to hunt, slaughter Bambi, and was trained as a cold blooded killer while in the armed services; or, it ain’t the gun, it’s the finger pulling the trigger; or, gun control means that only the criminals will have guns and only the conservative gun toting citizen who didn’t turn in their unregistered fire arms will survive; or, there are a bunch of crazies out there just looking for an excuse to kill something, so be alert and will armed; or, it ain’t the gun, its the bullet that kills you; and, my all time favorite, what else is new. As long as mankind (purposely not politically correct) shall exist, there will be differences of opinion so the key here is not to get your panties in a wad but talk it out and see the other side of the argument so you can at least understand why there is a disagreement without insisting that the other is wrong and needs to change their mind or else there will be blood spilled or some demonstration or riot. Listen for peace (seek peace and pursue it) and you will hear its call (seek and your will find); seek perfection and you will ever be disappointed. Talk is cheap, funerals are expensive (lets us reason together).

In those days bare arms would lead to more violence. Think of the smell!

I’m just glad they didn’t want to bare their butts! How would the wording look, and how would we misinterpret it?
