I took a weeks vacation once. It took me 2 1/2 days to get caught up. Never again. I only take one or two days now. My last day until retirement is Dec 22nd.
Now, thanks to smart phones, you can take the office with you on vacation. I tell the people in my office that I am spelunking in the Guatemalan jungle and donât have any âbarsâ there: even if Iâm only taking one day off. When I unplug, I unplug.
Iâm running out the clock to retirement and have no ambition to climb the corporate ladder so I donât have to play the game by all the rules.
Now that retirement is just a short time away, I treat even the âUrgentâ stuff like spam. I found most of the âUrgentâ stuff really wasnât, to the point the person forgot about it in under 2 hours. They only remembered it when I eventually responded. I ignore any and all complaints. The repeat requests get a response of âhow urgent is it reallyâ? I then give it the same treatment as everything else. Last but not least, that stack on Wilsonâs desk will be there when he gets back. Nobody will really care or notice how long it took to get done. Have a fun time, Wilson!

So either heâs important because nobody else can do what he does â
or unimportant because nobody bothered.
