While I was on terminal leave, I went to cash a check. I gave them my passport. They said that they preferred a driver’s license. I showed them my New York State driver’s license. It had a 20+ digit number. It had no picture and had been “expired” for 10 years (actually “extended” by military exclusion). They took the passport as ID.
We also went to Sears to do some Christmas shopping (this was in S. Cal) and found out that the old card had expired since we had not used it at all while we were overseas. The conversation went sort of like this when we applied for a new one.
“Do you have a job?” “I’m on terminal leave.”
“Do you live in town?” “Yes”
“Rent or own?” “Rent”
“How long have you been there?” “One week”
“Former residence” “Japan”
“Bank Account?” “Massachusetts”
“Are you looking for work?” “Yes”
“What occupation?” “Engineer and my wife is a Registered Nurse.”
Well, with that government-issued photo ID, he could get on an airplane. Remember, folks, the illusion of security is more important than security, which to do right is a real bother. To both sides.
